1 tola and 1 pavan of gold in grams, with today's price

1 tola is 11.664 grams. 1 pavan, also called a sovereign, is 8 grams. The two are easy to mix up, and on a wedding set the difference runs into lakhs.

1 tola = 11.664 g and 1 pavan = 8 g. Bhori, used in Assam and Bengal, is the same weight as a tola. To price any of them, convert to grams and multiply by the rate for the purity you are buying.

Where the tola comes from

The tola was fixed at 180 grains under the British Indian weights system in 1833. A grain is 0.06479891 grams, so a tola is 11.6638 grams, which gold trade rounds to 11.664. India moved to metric weights in 1956 and jewellery is weighed in grams, but the tola never left everyday speech in north and west India. Ten-tola bars are still a common size of gold bar.

In Assam and Bengal the same weight is called a bhori. Our bhori guide covers it in more detail.

Where the pavan comes from

In Kerala and Tamil Nadu, gold is counted in pavan, also written pavun or called a sovereign. It takes its name from the British gold sovereign coin, which weighed just under 8 grams, and the trade settled on a round 8 grams. When a family in Chennai says a bride got 50 pavan, they mean 400 grams.

The mix-ups that cost money

  • Tola and pavan. A tola is about 46% heavier than a pavan. A relative quoting “10 sovereigns” and a shop pricing “10 tola” are 36.64 grams apart.
  • Tola and 10 grams. Rate boards show a price per 10 grams. One tola is 1.1664 times that, so a per-10-gram rate is not the tola price.
  • Purity. A quote per tola or per pavan for 24K is not the price of 22K jewellery. Check which purity the number is for; our purity guide explains the grades.

Whatever unit people talk in, the bill is in grams. Work out the final price the way our GST guide shows, and compare the rate with today's IBJA rate.
