Buying gold in Guwahati
The rate above is IBJA's national benchmark, so it is the same in Guwahati as in the rest of India. What changes from shop to shop in Guwahati is the board rate each jeweller sets (often a little above IBJA) and the making charge, which depends on the design. Before you buy, ask for the rate per gram, the making charge and the hallmark (look for the BIS logo and "22K916" on 22-carat jewellery), then use the bill estimate above to check the total including 3% GST.
Many of Guwahati's jewellers are in and around Fancy Bazar and Paltan Bazar, with more showrooms along the main roads in areas such as Bhangagarh and Chandmari. Older family shops and branded showrooms sit side by side, so it pays to compare: ask two or three shops for their rate per bhori or per 10 grams on the same day, and for the making charge on the exact design you want.
When to buy in Guwahati
Demand in Assam peaks around Bohag Bihu in April and Durga Puja in the autumn, and through the wedding season. Some shops quote a little higher on busy days, so if your purchase can wait, compare the shop's rate with the IBJA rate above before you agree.
Before you pay: three checks
- Look for three marks on hallmarked jewellery: the BIS logo, the purity (for example 22K916 for 22 carat), and a six-character HUID code. BIS introduced the six-character HUID from 1 July 2021.
- Verify the HUID in the free BIS Care app (Verify HUID). It shows the jeweller who had the piece hallmarked, its purity and the type of article, so you can check it matches what you are buying.
- Ask for a bill that lists the weight, purity, HUID, gold rate, making charge and GST separately, and keep it. You will need it to resell, exchange or insure the piece.

Questions about buying gold in Guwahati
How much is 1 bhori of gold in Guwahati?
A bhori is about 11.66 grams. At today's IBJA rate, the page above shows the price of one bhori of 22K and 24K gold. A shop's own board rate is often slightly above IBJA, and GST and making charges are added on the bill.
Is the gold rate in Guwahati different from the rest of India?
The IBJA benchmark is the same everywhere in India. What differs between Guwahati shops is the board rate each one sets, the making charge, and how they round the weight, so compare those three numbers rather than the headline rate alone.
How is the gold rate in Guwahati calculated here?
It is the benchmark rate published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), which is the same across India. The 24K figure is IBJA's 999 rate; 22K is 91.6% of it and 18K is 75%, the way IBJA derives them. It excludes 3% GST and making charges, and jewellers in Guwahati often set their board rate a little above it, so confirm the final price at the counter.
What does 916 hallmark or 22 carat gold mean?
"916" is the hallmark stamped on 22-carat gold, indicating it is 91.6% pure gold with the rest being alloy metals for strength. Most Indian jewellery is sold in 22K (916) because pure 24K gold is too soft for daily-wear ornaments. 24K is used mainly for coins and bars.
Why do gold rates change every day?
Gold is a globally traded commodity. Its price moves with international demand, the US dollar, interest-rate expectations, central-bank buying and geopolitical events. The rupee–dollar exchange rate and import duty also move the Indian price. IBJA publishes two rates each working day, an opening rate around 12:30 PM and a closing rate around 6:30 PM IST.
Is 24K or 22K gold better for buying?
For jewellery you will wear, 22K (916) is the practical choice — it holds shape and stones better. For pure investment (coins, bars, digital gold) 24K is preferred because it is closer to pure gold and easier to resell at standard purity. Your choice depends on whether you want adornment or a store of value.
Does this rate include making charges?
No. The rate is for the metal only. When you buy jewellery, the jeweller adds a making charge, which depends on the design and the shop, plus 3% GST on the bill. The bill estimate on this page shows the total for any weight and making charge; ask your jeweller for an itemised quote.
