How gold loans work
A gold loan is a secured loan where you pledge gold jewellery, coins or bars as collateral. The lender values your gold (typically at around 22-carat purity), then lends up to the RBI-mandated 75% of that value. Because the loan is secured, approval is fast — often same-day — and income proof is usually not required, only basic KYC. Interest accrues on the outstanding amount, and you can repay via regular EMIs, interest-only servicing, or a bullet repayment at the end, depending on the scheme.
The amount you can borrow moves with the gold rate: when gold prices rise, the same jewellery fetches a larger loan. That is why we tie the per-gram loan figure above to today's IBJA 22K rate. Estimate your repayment with the calculator, and confirm the final rate and per-gram valuation with the lender before pledging.
Questions about gold loans
How much gold loan can I get per gram?
Lenders can lend up to 75% of the value of your pledged gold (the RBI loan-to-value ceiling), valued at around 22-carat purity. Our per-gram figure applies that 75% to today's IBJA 22K rate. The amount you get depends on the lender's own valuation and purity testing.
What is the typical gold-loan interest rate in India?
It depends on the lender, scheme, tenure and loan amount. Banks usually charge less than gold-loan companies (NBFCs), while NBFCs often approve faster. Check the current rate on the lender's own website or at the branch before you pledge.
Which documents are needed for a gold loan?
Most lenders ask for basic KYC: a government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, passport, voter ID or driving licence) and address proof. The gold itself is the collateral, so income proof is usually not required. Processing is fast — often same-day — once your gold is valued.
How is gold-loan EMI calculated?
EMI is computed from the principal, the annual interest rate and the tenure using the standard reducing-balance formula. Use the calculator above to see your monthly EMI, total interest and total payable for any combination. Note that many gold loans also offer bullet-repayment or interest-only schemes, which the EMI figure does not capture.
Can I repay a gold loan early?
Most lenders allow part-prepayment or full foreclosure, sometimes with a small fee. Because gold loans are short-tenure, prepaying reduces your interest outgo meaningfully. Check the specific lender's foreclosure terms before signing.
