Where the premium comes from
A coin is a small, precisely weighed, stamped piece of gold, usually sealed in a tamper-proof pack with a certificate. Someone pays for the minting, the packing and the shop's margin, and that is built into the price. Small coins carry the biggest premium as a share of their value, because the cost of minting a 1 g coin is not much less than a 10 g one.
Bars of 50 or 100 grams carry a smaller premium per gram, which is why people saving larger amounts tend to buy bars.
Before you buy a coin
- Ask for the price of the coin and the per-gram rate it is based on, separately.
- Check the purity and weight printed on the pack against the bill.
- Keep the pack sealed and keep the bill. Buyers check both when you sell.
- Compare the total with the table above. Then decide if the premium is worth it to you.
When you sell it back
Whoever buys the coin from you pays for its gold, not for the premium you paid. The difference is the cost of owning a physical coin. If your plan is to save rather than to gift, read our guide on whether digital gold is safe and the regulated alternatives SEBI names. To borrow against gold instead of selling, see gold loan value per gram.
